Insights Gained from Applying for SEO Positions: A Reflection on Website Performance Challenges

This week, I embarked on a journey to apply for various SEO roles, and it has been quite revealing—both enlightening and, frankly, a bit alarming. During my research process, I typically visit potential employers’ websites, examine their page source, and run diagnostic tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights to evaluate performance metrics.

What I discovered was quite startling. Many of these sites are grappling with severe performance issues, including:

  • Javascript execution times exceeding 20 seconds
  • Main thread blocking for over 30 seconds
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) taking around 9 seconds
  • Third-party code rendering for approximately 11 seconds
  • An excessive number of stylesheets, with some pages loading up to thirteen different files

These issues not only hinder user experience but also severely impact SEO rankings, as search engines prioritize fast, efficient websites. The extent of these performance bottlenecks highlights a broader industry challenge—many organizations may be unaware of how performance inefficiencies undermine their online presence.

To clarify, I bring in-house SEO experience and have collaborated closely with development teams, understanding the complexities and politics involved. My intention is not to criticize but to shed light on a pervasive problem that needs attention.

In closing, I wonder: For those of you working within agencies or managing complex sites, what are some of the most common performance hurdles you face? And how do you approach resolving these issues before they threaten your SEO objectives?

Conclusion

The takeaway from this week’s exploration is clear—a deep understanding of website performance is crucial for effective SEO. Addressing these technical bottlenecks is vital not only for improving user experience but also for securing better search engine rankings. As the industry continues to evolve, prioritizing website efficiency should remain at the forefront of digital strategies.
